Madhurima Oct 2011-
July 2012 Activities: A report
The October get-together of Madhurima was dedicated to the
memory of Vayalar Ramavarma
the greatest lyricist Malayalam cinema has ever known. The evening was
enriched by the presence of Ms.Rajalakshmi,
the best female playback singer of the year 2011-2012.
Her beautiful rendering of the song “sravanachandrika poochoodichu”
mesmerized the audience. Madhurima singers also paid tribute to the great
poet by singing his everlasting creations to the orchestral accompaniment of
Rana and his group.
Madhurima Patron Sri. Perumpuzha Gopalakrishnan addressing
the audiance and Usha, Bindu and Ratheesh singing the "Poovili ..
ponnonamai" song during the Onam program.
Madhurima always sets apart the month of November for the younger crowd.
This November the Cosmopolitan Club at Muttada became the venue of our
get-together. Sindhu and Parvathy
along with Charu, Malu, Akhil, Swathi,
Appu, Sangeeth, Sagar, Niranjana, Nandana and
Vinaya regaled the audience with
their brilliant variety entertainment. Anita and Rohit performed their parts
with abandon and the whole evening passed off in a jolly mood. Dr. N.N.
Panicker, a well known social activist and enviornmentalist and his wife
who were present on that occasion gave
us food for thought with their talk and
“vanchipattu” about the dying rivers of Kerala .
Our December get togethers are very special occasions as
it heralds yet another year
and also is infused with the calm and joyous spirit of Christmas. This year the
highlights of our Christmas eve program were the tableau and the simple and
graceful candle dance by our youngsters. The befitting decoration of the venue,
gifts, Xmas father and devotional songs, all of these together lent a true Xmas
feel to the program. Another
heartwarming factor was the presence of our guest families and their active
participation in the function.
CDS(Centre For Development Studies, Ulloor) and Madhurima
has a long standing association , thanks to Shobha Kannan’s initiative. We
were invited to CDS for the fifth time and on 21st of
January 2012 the students and
faculty of CDS and Madhurima enjoyed
an evening of music and friendship. The evening was filled with sweet melodies
and vibrant tunes from different languages and the enthusiasm and active
participation of our hosts . “Hum
sub Bharathheey hai” , little
Nandana sang this song
and became the star of the evening. As
usual the program came to an end with the homely and tasty dinner which was
served in the CDS canteen.
The scenic surroundings of the residence of Shri. Pradeepkumar and Smt.
Nileena became the venue of our program on the 20th of February.
Since it happened to be the auspicious day of “Sivarathri” many of our
members sang songs invoking Lord Siva and Parvathy.
The month of March heralded the 6th year of commemoration of
Madhurima’s founder patron G.Devarajan. We rekindled our fond association with
the great Master on the 11th of March in avery apt manner. Smt.
Medini was one of our guests. Smt.Medini, an old world left comrade regaled the
gathering with her impeccable rendering of songs reflecting high social and
literary values, conviction and honesty of a bygone era. Another guest of the
evening was Shri.Madhu who was the soul companion of Devarajan Master during the
last years of his life. Shri. Madhu’s reminiscences of his association with
the Master were an eye opener for all at Madhurima. The official meeting was
followed by a wonderful ‘ganamela’ by the members of Madhurima accompanied
by Rana’s orchestra. Some photos are shown of Shri Madhu, Smt. Medini with the
Secretary (Usha Subhash) and President (Vivekanandan Nair) of Madhurima.

The one day trip which we conduct every year fell on the 2nd of
June 2012 this year and the resort we selected was “Krishnatheeram “
situated in Varkala. It was a day of unbridled merrymaking and unlimited singing
with the sea and sand in the background. Some photos of the trip are shown below
to convey the mood of the participants.

The visit to the open jail near Neyyar Dam in July 2012 gave Madhurima
a glimpse in to the lives of the inmates who are convicted for major
crimes. Away from their homes and loved ones, they find solace in books, music,
and farming. Many of us were moved to tears when some of them poured their
hearts out through their poems and songs. The visit left indelible memories of
the harsh realities of life in our hearts.
